Peace call rung out as Manipur gears up for Lok Sabha polls

The peace appeal came at a critical time when the state is gearing up for the Lok Sabha elections amidst a lingering volatile situation due to the ongoing ethnic clash that broke out on May 3 last year.

With the Lok Sabha elections in Manipur tentatively set for April, the state BJP Political Programmes and Meetings co-in-charge Michael Shaiza has called upon the people of the state to work towards creating a conducive environment for the return of peace and normalcy.

The appeal came at a critical time when the state is gearing up for the Lok Sabha elections amidst a lingering volatile situation due to the ongoing ethnic clash that broke out on May 3 last year. The nine-month-long violence has caused tremendous loss of lives and properties and displaced tens of thousands of innocent civilians.

In a recent media interview in Ukhrul town, Shaiza emphasized the need for love, forgiveness, and understanding among the different communities in the state. “Violence has hindered the progress and development of the state,” he said adding that the return of peace and normalcy crucial for its overall growth.

“I sincerely pray and believe that we all can live together… co-exist with love, patience, forgiveness and understanding. As we set our foot on this very auspicious New Year, let us usher in love, forgiveness, togetherness and understanding amongst us,” he pleaded.

Shaiza also spoke about the love and respect that the Nagas have for both the Meitei/Meetei and Kuki-Zo communities.

He further added, “We (Nagas) are caught between the devil and the deep blue sea because we are very close and intimate with both the communities.”

“I urge all citizens to shun the path of violence and give peace another chance,” he said stressing the need for all to come together and work towards bringing back peace and normalcy in the state.

Regarding the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, Shaiza urged the citizens of Manipur to exercise their right to vote and participate in the democratic process, putting aside their differences. “As citizens exercise their right to vote, it is also their responsibility to ensure a safe and peaceful environment for the smooth functioning of the democratic process,” he explained.

“A stable, peaceful environment is a prerequisite for the effective implementation of government policies and projects,” said Shaiza, who is also the president of Environment Rehabilitators’ Association (ERA), an NGO based in Ukhrul town.

He added that this is especially true for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, as a peaceful environment is essential for conducting free and fair polls.

Shaiza then urged all citizens of the state to exercise their universal adult franchise and collectively elect their representatives in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. “It is our duty to choose the most capable leaders who will govern us with integrity, justice, and righteousness,” he said.

According to Shaiza, the coming LS polls hold great significance as the same determine the state’s representation in the national parliament.

“We are fortunate to have the opportunity to vote and make a difference in the course of our state’s future. Let us not miss this turning point to bring progress and positive change in our beloved state,” he exuded.
